The Sun, Moon, all the major planets, as well as over 1,000 comets, and all known minor planets (about 250,000 at this time) can be displayed by TheSky Version 5 Levels II, Level III (Macintosh version) and Level IV.

TheSky Version 5 Levels II, III and IV also contains over 500 beautiful deep-sky and planetary pictures, an additional 13,000 NGC and IC thumbnail pictures and over 150 pictures from the spectacular David Malin collection of photographs. All Levels of TheSky contain large databases of stars, non-stellar objects (such as galaxies, star clusters and nebulas), pictures, and minor planets.

The following table lists the stellar and non-stellar catalogs that are supplied with all Levels of TheSky.

†The Hipparcos-Tycho Catalogs are the primary stellar databases used to display information by TheSky for stars to about 12 magnitude.  TheSky also cross-references stars from the Guide Star catalog (GSC), the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory Catalog (SAO), the Positions and Proper Motion catalog (PPM), Henry Draper Catalog (HD), and others.

Links to Update TheSky's Ephemeral Data

TheSky can display the positions of comets, minor planets and satellites. The data required to accurately display these objects changes frequently and must be updated. Use the links below to download updated orbital element data.

Object Type Web Site Address to Obtain Updated Orbital Element Data
Comets http://cfa-www.harvard.edu/cfa/ps/Ephemerides)
Satellites http://celestrak.com/ (T.S. Kelso's Web Site)
Minor Planets http://asteroid.lowell.edu

Note: The Minor Planet Center updates daily the orbital element data that is used to display the minor planets in TheSky. The name of the file that contains all of the latest data is AstOrb.dat. Currently, this file is approximately 60 MB (uncompressed) and contains orbital element data for well over 230,000 minor planets.

  1. Download and decompress the file AstOrb.dat to TheSky's \Program Files\Software Bisque\User\Minor Planets folder.

    ftp://ftp.lowell.edu/pub/elgb/astorb.html

  2. From TheSky, click Data | Extended Minor Planets to display the Extended Minor Planet dialog box.
  3. On the Extended Minor Planet dialog box, click the Browse Folder button (...) in the Orbital Element File Name group.
  4. Select the file from step 1 and then click Open.
  5. Select the desired extended minor planet display options and then click OK.

TheSky will now compute and display the most recent positions of all the known minor planets.

Want More Data?

TheSky Level IV can display the USNO stellar database (up to 500 million stars, complete to about 19th magnitude.)

If you need more data, TheSky can import data so that you create astronomical databases from ASCII text files that contain celestial object information.

Click here for details about setting up and using the USNO stellar database with TheSky.
