“The King of the Planets and An Emperor Star, plus The Farthest Full Moon of the Year”

For the week of March 26-April 1, 2007

The giant planet Jupiter presently appears near a giant star, Antares, in the morning sky. Next week the Waning Gibbous Moon will join them, appearing next to Antares on April 7th, and then forming a triangle with the star and planet on the 8th.

(Shown about an hour before sunset on the mornings of April 6th-10th for mid-Northern latitudes.)

Next week's Full Moon on the night of April 2nd is the farthest, and therefore smallest and faintest, Full Moon of the year. It will be nearly 30000 miles/48000 km farther than the nearest Full Moon of 2007, which occurs on the night of Oct 25th.

(The rotation of each Moon image above is shown for the time of transit—when the Moon appears mid-way from East to West. North is toward the top of the image.)
