Extended Labels (View | Display Explorer, Extended Labels option)

Extended labeling allows you to display catalog-specific information on the Virtual Sky for stellar and non-stellar objects. For example, the above screen shows stars that are labeled with their SAO catalog number and distance from Earth.

To Label a Catalog Object with Extended Information

  1. Click View | Display Explorer.

  2. Navigate to the Core Databases.

  3. Open the Extended Labels node for the desired object type and mark the options that you want to appear in the label.

Extended Labels only appear at fields of view of 50 degrees and less.

Magnitudes do not show a decimal point by convention. For example, the magnitude displayed for a 1.0 magnitude star is 10. This convention is used by astronomers so that the period (.) is not mistaken for a star.
