Introduction to PC-Astrom

The plate reduction algorithms used by CCDSoft’s AutoAstrometry are part of a LINUX/DOS-based library developed by Patrick Wallace, the author of TPoint Telescope Pointing Analysis Software. These routines are extremely rigorous and used by many professional observatories throughout the world for astrometric data reduction.

This help file book “PC-ASTROM – A Plate Reduction Program”, accompanies the PC-ASTROM library and is included here for readers interested in a more advanced discussion of how the astrometric data reduction is performed.

Section 1 — PC-Astrom Introduction

PC-ASTROM is a simple plate reduction utility, designed to allow the non-specialist user to get good results with a minimum of trouble and esoteric knowledge. The user supplies a text file containing information about the exposure and the positions of reference and unknown stars; PC-ASTROM performs the various coordinate transformation and fitting operations required, displays a synopsis report on the command terminal, and prepares a detailed report for later printing.
