Video Hardware Issues: Desktop versus Laptop Computers
|
Laptop Computers |
The video hardware for laptop computers is "built in" to the computer's motherboard. That means there is no separate video card on laptop computers.
What does this mean in terms of running Seeker on a laptop?
If, after running the Seeker OpenGL Compatibility Test, your laptop computer's built-in video hardware is not compatible with OpenGL 2.0 or later (or the original equipment manufacturer's latest video drivers for your laptop do not support OpenGL 2.0 or later), then Seeker cannot run on your laptop. The only solution is to use a laptop computer that has video hardware compatible with OpenGL 2.0 or later.
So I need a new laptop computer. Which one should I purchase?
For Mac users, any Apple MacBook Pro running OS 10.4.8 or later will run Seeker.
For Windows users, the following laptops computers should be compatible:
Software Bisque has successfully run Seeker for Windows on the following laptop computers:

Desktop Computers |
The video card on most personal computers is a separate piece of hardware that plugs into the computer's motherboard. If, after running the Seeker OpenGL Compatibility Test, your desktop computer's video card and/or video driver software is not compatible with OpenGL 2.0 or later, then you can purchase an OpenGL 2.0 compatible video card at most computer stores.
AGP vs. PCIE Interface for Windows Computers
If you're buying a new computer, then the computer's motherboard will most likely use the PCIE interface for the graphics hardware. If you're upgrading your older computer with a new video card, then you must determine if the computer's motherboard uses the older AGP or PCIE interface before buying a new video card.

**Running Seeker under Windows Vista
Seeker will not run under Windows Vista until a video driver that supports OpenGL 2.0 or later has been installed. The Microsoft-specific video drivers distributed with the “out of the box” version of Windows Vista support OpenGL 1.1 and not OpenGL 2.0 or later. You must install an OpenGL 2.0-compatible video driver from the video hardware manufacturer first (visit their web page and look for the “Download Drivers” link). Search Windows Vista Help for “manually update drivers” for details about installing video drivers.
See the OpenGL and Video Card Compatibility page for a list of video hardware that Software Bisque used to run Seeker on Windows Vista.
Important Notes
Not all video hardware has Vista-compatible drivers that also support OpenGL 2.0 or later. Check with the video hardware manufacturer to find out if your video card is supported under Windows Vista and supports OpenGL 2.0.
If your video card does not have a Windows Vista driver that supports OpenGL 2.0, then you’ll need to purchase Vista-ready video hardware.
Some computer manufacturers (OEMs) distribute Window Vista with OpenGL 2.0 compatible video hardware and software drivers. Seeker will run on these machines, although you should still always install the latest video drivers on your computer.
