Newer model mobile devices use a Universal Serial Bus (USB) AutoSync Cable, to connect a mobile device to a desktop or notebook computer. However, go to, robotic and software-guided telescopes require an RS232 serial connection (not USB) to connect the telescope to the mobile device. To resolve this conflict, you must purchase a Serial AutoSync cable from the manufacturer of your mobile device. Serial AutoSync cables have a DB9 RS232 connector so that the mobile device can communicate with the telescope.
HP/Compaq Devices
HP/Compaq sells different models of telescope cables that connect iPAQ mobile devices to a desktop or notebook and to a telescope. The Compaq Serial AutoSync Serial Cable (part number 191008-B21) is designed for synchronizing the mobile device to the desktop or notebook computer and has a DB9 female end connector. This is the "standard" cable that should be used for telescope communication.
The iPAQ RS232 Serial Cable (part number 236251-B21) connects the iPAQ to cellular phones and has a male DB9 end connector. If you purchased this cable, neither of the above adaptors is required when connecting the mobile device to the telescope. Compaq also offers a Universal AutoSync Cable that has both USB and DB9 connectors.
If you have any questions about the cables, please contact the manufacturer of the cable to determine its technical specifications.
