You need to come to AIC!
Richard S. Wright Jr.'s Blog

This year will be my fourth trip to the Advanced Imaging Conference in five years helping to represent Software Bisque. I'm especially excited and honored this year to have been invited to be one of the speakers, and on the AIC web site you'll find my name at the bottom of a list of great speakers all of whom I have a great deal of respect for.

AIC has long been the premier conference for astro imaging/Astrophotography, and in fact Software Bisque was one of the founding sponsors (long before I joined up). Last year the AIC board took a year off, not a break, but a chance to "reboot" or "re-imagine" the conference if you will. The new AIC has been expanded and covers not only deep sky CCD imaging, but deep sky DSLR, TWAN nightscape photography, planetary imaging with and without a DSLR, and lunar and solar imaging. Whatever your interests, you'll find workshops where I promise you will learn something new about your craft. All the workshop speakers are noted in their fields, and have an amazing body of work to show for their experience.

The workshops are only part of the story though. There are also the vendors (ahem... ;-). Seriously, every vendor with a serious interest in advanced imaging makes an effort to attend this conference as well. It's not just a chance for them to sell you stuff... it's YOUR chance to talk to them in person. Not on a forum, not in an email but to meet them face to face. Touch and handle the equipment yourself, ask questions or just get to know them. We are all human beings, and often an in person discussion breaks down barriers and misunderstandings, and can forge long lasting relationships. This is one of my FAVORITE parts of any such gatherings, and you'd be surprised to see how well some of the vendors who might be competitors actually get along and respect each other (sometimes much more so than our customers on the message boards - LOL!).

But wait, there's more! AIC is extremely well attended as well, and there is a huge social component to these gatherings. It's also a chance to meet fellow imagers, exchange ideas, show off your work to one another, and make new friends. I have friends now all over the country from attending these events with whom I'll talk frequently, and not always about astrophotography... although that's a nice perk! Networking and getting to know other imagers is a very important means to grow your own skill set and see things differently; break out of the box so to speak. Speakers as well mingle at lunch time, and in the vendor area, so there's plenty of opportunity for one on one conversations. I can't tell you how much I've learned from these conferences, both from workshops, and just spending some time talking to fellow and often more experienced imagers.

No man is an island... if it's time to take your astrophotography to the next level, AIC is a great place to do that.

See you there!
Richard

This will be my first AIC.  I'm going for all the reasons you mention above.  Particularly to be able to meet the people behind the products.  This sort of thing was enormously helpful at NEAF where I walked between three vendors and got a very complicated stack of new gear all talking to one another.  I also agree barriers fall when its not just a "post" but indeed a real person ...and I quickly reconfirmed that indeed these guys really do mean to be helpful
