Connectivity problem with MYT

This problem started with the mini USB port detaching from the PCB.  I got that problem repaired, and actually connected to the scope and homed it after the repair.  However, once I got it home, I can no longer connect to the mount, getting an Error 203.  I accessed the MKS5000 board, and there's an LED that's flashing on the PCB (see attached photo).  It's the one closest to the bottom of the photo.

When I turn the power on, I get the normal initial whistle, but nothing else.

How should I proceed?

This board-mounted LED is not intended to indicate control system status, and may flash.

This indicates the repair may not have worked, and the USB may not be operational.

  • If the troubleshooting steps all fail, please fill out an RMA Request Form and email it to the Front Desk to get the MKS 5000 replacement process started.

What is the status of the RA and Dec LEDs?  Does the TCS LED pulsate?

If the control system does not emit the motor initialization beeps (audio, video demonstrating this), something is preventing motor initialization (unrelated to the reported USB failures above).

  1. Turn off the mount.
  2. Unplug every cable from the Instrument Panel and Electronics Box except for power.
  3. In both axes, rotate the mechanical switch to the Balance position.
  4. Turn on the mount.

Do both motors initialize now?

Right now, the TCS LED is pulsating between red and blue.  The RA and Dec LED's are not showing anything.  The motors are still not initializing.  However, when I turn the mount on, I am getting USB to initialize on my computer, but trying to connect gives the error 203.  

When the USB port was repaired, I was able to connect via USB and I homed the mount.  However, I made a mistake and put the RA switch in the balance position with securing holding the mount, and as it was not in balance, it quickly moved....I was able to catch it but it didn't seem like anything bad happened.  I didn't try to do anything else until I set it up a few days later and then got the 203 error.  Could the 203 error be caused by the motors not initializing?  If so, the USB actually could be working ok.

Would a problem with the board cause the motors to not initialize?  Is there anything I can do to check the motors?

Do you mean the LEDs are not illuminated when the mount is turned on?  They should be either flashing (showing an error condition) or emitting steady (meaning all is okay). 

If the LEDs are not illuminated, there's something fundamentally wrong with the MKS 5000 PCB.   Note that USB communication is not possible if the motors are not initialized (that is, the LEDs are emitting anything but steady light).

Yes.

Verify:
  • Power supplied by the PSU is 48V DC.
  • Every cable that is plugged into the MKS 5000 is secure and in the correct orientation. See the Paramount GEM MKS 5000 Replacement Instructions for details.
  • DC servo motors very rarely fail; since both motors are behaving the same (cannot be initialized) root cause is more likely a power/cabling/PCB issue.

Both RA and Dec LED's are dark...no light at all.

I'm using the power supply that came with the mount.

All cables on the MKS5000 seem secure. 

I'll do the RMA request and get a new board. 

 

Also, since I'm unable to connect to it, I can't save the MKS_INDEX_ANGLE.  The mount info is:

       MYT ID:  C00114

       Serial number:  {redacted}

Dick,

I notice that your Paramount MYT hasn't been registered to your dnewell73 member account. I would recommend that you register both its hardware and software suite serial numbers at your earliest convenience.

Brian, thanks for the note.
I registered the MYT mount, but when I tried to register the software suite, I got an error saying it had already been registered.  I bought the mount and software from Matt Moser in CA.  I did transfer the license from Matt to myself, and paid the $300 transfer cost.  I thought that when I did the transfer, that would have registered the software to me.  Please advise....

I replaced the booard, and upon power up, I get all of the expected sounds, i.e., both motors initialize.  However, when I connect to it with TheSkyX, the first message I get is Mount is tracking in sidereal mode, or something close to it.  Doesn't ask about homing.  So then I hit the Find Home menu item.  The mount immediately gives an error saying that the mount cannot slew.  This happens in both states (balance or engaged).  What should I do next?

If the mount has not been homed previously, and if TheSkyX does not prompt to home the mount immediately upon connection, the Telescope window > Bisque TCS > Parameters tab > Advanced > Homing > Home Required? is set to 0.  Set this parameter to 1 for both RA and Dec to require homing.

Start with the Troubleshooting section in this document.  If the motors successfully initialize (RA/Dec LEDs are steady and the TCS LED pulsates) but the mount cannot successfully find home when the worm and gear are disengaged, most likely MKS 5000 has been configured with the wrong motor index angles, or the wrong mount type.  The above document describes how to proceed in either case.

Both of the home required parameters were set to 0, as were the index angles.  I set the home required parameters to 1, and the RA index angle to 200 and the Dec index angle to 3850.  Those were the values that were listed on a tag attached to the PCB.

However, trying to home the mount still gives the error that it can't slew.  I checked the RA homing sensor and the cable is attached and looks fine.

This morning I clicked on Measure RA and Dec angles and got the values 327 and 3731, so that's what I'm using now.  Still get the error can not slew.   Now what?    Thanks.

I re-measured the RA and Dec index angles...this time they came up with 166 and 3867....and now the mount can slew and find home.  Finally!   Thanks for your help, Daniel.

These parameters show the index angles we use to start with. Your symptoms sound like your index angles need to be closer, so I would try measuring them. Place both axes in the balance position and through the Bisque TCS dialog box under Utilities find the Index Angles section and measure RA and then Dec. These will save to the board. Restart your paramount (turn off and on again and re-connect) and see if you can home then.
