Is there a tutorial on custom horizons? I've made them for other programs, but I don't know where to put the files/edit paramators in sky x. Tried to search but didnt see anything.

Thanks

There's presently no tutorial for creating panoramic horizons; this is a "wish list" item.

Essential items:

  • Photo format is PNG with a transparent alpha channel for the "see through" regions (such as the background sky)
  • PNG width must be in increments of 512 pixels to be rendered correctly.
  • Horizon images are located in the Resources\Common\Photos\Horizons folder.  Default Windows folder: C:\Program Files\Software Bisque\TheSkyX <Edition Name>.  Default Mac folder: Applications/<Application Bundle>/Contents folder.

When you place a photo in the Horizons folder, TheSkyX will make it available in the Horizon Photos list on the Horizon tab of the Display > Horizon & Atmosphere dialog.  Double-click the photo name to apply it to TheSkyX.

Consider using a copy of an existing horizon photo as an "test example".

Ok, thanks. One more question...

What is the lowest ratio of  Width to Height that can be imported. My site has a few tall trees and the standard 8x ratio (4096 x 512) requires me to crop the top of some of the higher trees. I tried a 6x ratio (3072 x 512)but it was not recognized.  Any ideas?

Thanks

A 3072 x 512 PNG image works here.  (The aspect ratio should not matter).

To verify, this is what I did:

  1. Exit TheSkyX.
  2. Open "Ice Lake.png" in Photoshop.
  3. Save it as a non-interlaced PNG in the horizons folder.
  4. Start TheSkyX.
  5. Attempt to load the PNG.  Direct copy displays fine.

Next:

  1. Exit TheSkyX.
  2. Open "Ice Lake.png" in Photoshop.
  3. Save it as a 3072 x 512 non-interlaced PNG in the horizons folder.
  4. Start TheSkyX.
  5. Attempt to load the PNG.  6x aspect ratio copy works fine.

Next:

  1. Exit TheSkyX.
  2. Open "Ice Lake.png" in Photoshop.
  3. Save it as a 2048 x 512 non-interlaced PNG in the horizons folder.
  4. Start TheSkyX.
  5. Attempt to load the PNG.  4x aspect ratio copy works fine.

Let me know if you can/cannot reproduce the above.
