The Waning Crescent Moon will appear to pass near the two planets whose orbits
are closest to Earth's—Venus and Mars—in the morning sky this weekend.
The three will form a beautiful triangle on Sunday, December 1st (see inset), at
which time the Earth will be 363,000 km/225,000 miles from the Moon, 57 million
km/35 million miles from Venus, and 341 million km/212 million miles from Mars.
(Shown about an hour before sunrise for mid-Northern latitudes.)
