During the first few days of August the waxing gibbous Moon may be used to help
locate the giant planet Jupiter and a super-gigantic star, Antares. On the
evening of August 1st, Jupiter appears above and to the left of the First
Quarter Moon. The following night Jupiter is to the upper-right of the Moon. On
the night of the 3rd, Antares—at 700 times the diameter of our Sun—appears to
the left of the Moon, and on the 4th it is to the right of the Moon.
(Shown about an hour after sunset for mid-Northern latitudes.)
