    README

The list below provides coordinates and identifications for stars in the field of Collinder 223.  The cluster was observed photometrically by Claria & Lapasset, who provided a good chart.  Unlike most studies, the
numbering scheme spirals inward to the cluster center rather than outward.

The cluster position is some 16' in error in both SIMBAD and WEBDA, and the Dias et al catalogue also copies the erroneous Lund position. The position error was corrected by Timo Karhula, and appears in the 2003 Archinal & Hynes "Star Clusters" monograph.  I have adopted as the center the position of star 80 = HD 305218, which is similar to Karhula's.  Because of a strong obscuration eastward across the area, the center is not well defined.

In SIMBAD the star-list appears essentially without coordinates apart from a few HD stars, and many entries need to be linked.

The Blanco & Munch red star, BM V 221, is incorrectly linked to HD 91156, but is instead star 85, which is the bright red IRAS source near the cluster center.  This has spectral type M3 according to the spectral survey by MacConnell and M4/5 by Loden et al, but called 'k4iii' from DDO indices by Claria & Lapasset---the IRAS/MSX detection and 2MASS colors confirm the types from spectra, however.  MacConnell's type, M3, is probably to be preferred.

I show complete UCAC2, Tycho-2, and HD/CD/CPD names for the stars, and copy the Claria & Lapasset V magnitudes rounded to 0.1-mag precision. I determined the HD/CD/CPD names using the relevant HDE chart, and by overlaying plots of the Durchmusterungen at the scale of the C&L chart.
