update (Oct, 2006) ~18 meg
contains the most recent images along with several fixes and omissions!
Over the last few years I have been trying to keep up with the Hubble images
and related press releases using TheSky has an index to the data. The
tools found in TheSky make this relatively easy but it still takes a lot of
time to add the current images and press release text links and then check them. To
download the latest SDB files necessary to access the
Hubble images and
PressRelease database files. Click here for details
on adding and using TheSky SDB files
When the SDB files for plotting the pictures
and press release text are added to
TheSky's list of active databases you can search for Hubble pictures or press
release text directly or simply click on objects that have an image associated with
them and then access the Hubble information.
Example, take the Trapezium stars
in the Orion nebula. There have been many images of this star forming
region imaged by the HST. See the following image showing the narrow field
of the HST imaging this area. What are Proplyds you might ask? Add
the SDB files in TheSky to show the images and press release text and
you can read about the image!

You can see the power and educational value of doing this!
Although not entirely complete yet hundreds of the HST images have been setup
for access in TheSky and more are being added. The more I hear about wanting
more the more I will be happy to supply. Remember that images, wave files, and
movie files can be used from ANY source in TheSky.
A description and the use of TheSky Database files (SDB) can be found here,
You can use the Find dialog to search for a specific Hubble image or Press
Release.
Find dialog

Go down to SDB's | Hubble Pictures
Let's say you want to see where the
famous "Hubble Deep Field" image was taken. Using the Find dialog enter "Hubble
Pictures Deep Field" without the quotes and press enter.
Find location of the
Hubble Deep Field

Search Hubble Pictures
Because there is a Deep Field North
AND a Deep Field South the find will actually have more than one entry for the
Deep Field.
Expand the matches

Use Down Arrow
Now just choose the match you want
from the list to center and or frame the object.
You can also see a complete list of entries
in the SDB file by using the Display Explorer to Expand the Sky Databases
entries followed by Hubble Pictures. See below. Check Mark the Frame
Object AND Object Information boxes and you can go down the list and center on
these objects that have pictures and see the Hubble images and accompanying
press release text for the objects.
List of all objects is presented to you

Finding them is easy!
What about sound files or movie files?
Yes these two can easily be added to TheSky! By making SDB
files to access either WAVE narrated files for objects or AVI movie files for
the objects you can then playback a movie related file or sound file as
well. I am willing to provide this if anyone wants to see examples of this
from the Hubble data! Just email me!
How about my own CCD images or sound or movie files
Yep. ANY image from ANY source can be added to TheSky
display. Either as a link like the Hubble images or
even embedded directly
in TheSky display. See the example David
Malin Image of M42 above. All of the Anglo Australian images (Malin
series) are copyrighted material and CANNOT be used without
permission. PLEASE make an attempt to get permission when using anyone's
images from the web or other sources. The Hubble images are also
copyrighted and that link is provided at the top of this page and here
