CANNOT SEE DOUBLE STARS IN THESKY6

    ISSUE

When I click on the Double Star button on the Objects Toolbar, no double stars appear.

    RESOLUTION

Double stars, and multiple star systems, are displayed differently depending upon TheSky6’s field of view.

    • At fields greater than 50 degrees (where multiple star systems typically cannot be resolved), double stars are not shown.

    • At fields between 50 degrees and about two degrees (more or less, depending upon the angular separation of the star system), a small graphical symbol represents the locations of a double stars. In crowded star fields, click View | Display Explorer, then clear the “Stars” option to make double stars easier to identify.

    • At fields less than two degrees (more or less), lines are drawn between the stars in the double or multiple star system.

20-degree field (approximately) showing double stars. Narrow field showing lines connecting multiple star system (with extended labels).

     Other Notes:

    • TheSky6 displays 99,068 double stars from the Washington Catalog of Double Stars (WDS). Click View | Display Explorer, open the Stars node, and mark the “WDS” option to turn them on.

    • To view double stars, click Edit | Find, then navigate to the Stellar | WDS node. Mark the Frame Object option, then scroll through the list of WDS stars (sorted in blocks of 20000).

    APPLIES TO

    TheSky6, All Editions.
